Tempe’s Commitment to Sustainability: A Community Effort

Tempe, Arizona, is actively pursuing a sustainable future through a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental resilience and promoting community engagement. The city’s Sustainability & Resilience Division, established in 2018, leads these efforts by collaborating with residents, businesses, and nonprofit organizations to implement the 2022 Climate Action Plan Update. This plan focuses on reducing urban heat and fostering a more resilient community.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

The Energy Team within the Sustainability & Resilience Division is dedicated to decreasing greenhouse gas emissions by advancing energy efficiency and transitioning to renewable energy sources. Tempe has set ambitious goals, including achieving 100% renewable energy for municipal operations by 2035 and attaining carbon neutrality in both community and municipal operations by 2050. These objectives are pursued through various programs that promote electric vehicle adoption, energy-efficient practices, and the integration of renewable energy solutions.

Urban Cooling and Tree Planting Initiatives

Recognizing the challenges posed by urban heat, Tempe has implemented several programs to mitigate its effects. The city has partnered with the Salt River Project (SRP) on the “Right Tree, Right Place” program, which focuses on planting appropriate tree species to enhance power reliability and safety. This initiative is particularly significant in neighborhoods recovering from severe storms that resulted in the loss of numerous trees. By planting trees in strategic locations, the program aims to restore the urban canopy and provide much-needed shade.

Water Conservation Efforts

Water conservation is a critical component of Tempe’s sustainability strategy. The city offers various rebate programs to encourage non-residential customers to adopt water-saving measures. These include incentives for converting traditional landscapes to desert-friendly designs and upgrading cooling towers to more efficient systems. Such initiatives not only conserve water but also support businesses in reducing operational costs.

Community Engagement and Recognition

Community involvement is central to Tempe’s sustainability efforts. The Tempe Chamber of Commerce has introduced the “Tempe Green Forward Badge Program,” which recognizes businesses, nonprofits, schools, and civic agencies that incorporate sustainable practices into their daily operations. Participants receive physical and digital badges, are listed on the Tempe Chamber’s Green Forward map, and are featured on the organization’s website, highlighting their commitment to environmental responsibility.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Tempe demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and resilience. By fostering collaboration between municipal departments, local businesses, and residents, the city is making significant strides toward a greener and more sustainable future.
